M100 and SN2006X

< Previous Next > My first ever picture of supernova! I have terrible light pollution south in the altitudes M100 climbs. Despite quite good transparency I could only expose 90s subs, so the galaxy is a bit noisy. I also screwed up the flats somehow so they actually increased noise level. However I was amazed I could even resolve it as very round well defined exploding star using only 400mm of focal length. This image is 100% crop of the original. There are several fuzzies visible in the original frame. There's even two of them in this small crop, NGC4312 in the lower right corner and NGC 4328 to the left of M100. I used IRIS and Hubble Guide Star Catalog to estimate the supernova brightness and location from the green channel image. Pretty close to the
official numbers
with very moderate equipment!
